ABSTRACT

This study examines the structure and learning experiences of a street dance history course in the context of the expanding global K-Culture movement. Using a qualitative case study design, the research analyzes a 15-week graduate-level course through phenomenological methods to explore how students perceive and construct knowledge of street dance history. Data were collected from class observations, learning journals, surveys, and semi-structured interviews with 15 graduate students from diverse dance backgrounds. Colaizzi’s phenomenological analysis was applied to derive key themes regarding students’ cognitive, cultural, and interpretive engagement with historical content. The findings reveal how the course’s lecture-based and discussion-centered structures enable students to contextualizing street dance within broader cultural, artistic, and historical frameworks. This study highlights the need for systematic historical education in street dance curricula to foster informed artistic practice and strengthen the academic foundation of practical dance programs in higher education.
