ABSTRACT

In this paper, I attempt to situate the recent shift in perceptions of music-related intangible cultural property within the context of the postmodern turn, in particular the “performative turn.” In doing so, the paper aims to move beyond the binary logic of tangible/intangible to explore the rich meanings of “musical performance,” particularly from a postcolonial perspective on non-Western cultures. To do so, I will take several theoretical and conceptual detours. First, I will critically examine the idea of “music as performance” as it emerged in the field of new musicology in the late 20th century, and further explore the concept of “performance” through postcolonial issues in ethnomusicology (music anthropology) and performance studies. In doing so, I will pay attention to the concepts of “archive” and “repertoire” as proposed by Diana Taylor, and conclude our discussion by using these concepts to examine some of the critical issues surrounding Korea’s Intangible Cultural Property No. 1, Jongmyo Jereak.
