ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to establish Alain Badiou’s theory of fine art. Although Badiou has written several articles on fine art, he has not developed a comprehensive theory on the subject. This endeavor unfolds in three stages. The first involves examining the characteristics of art in general. For Badiou, art is one of the procedures for producing truth alongside science, politics, and love. Badiou terms the unique truth procedure of art as “artistic configuration,” with the work of art holding a significant position. Second, the study confirms Badiou’s position on the fine art. According to Badiou, art is about creating “Ideas.” Each artistic genre demonstrates the infinite possibilities of the universe in its distinct way, and fine art unfolds possibilities for a new world through the creation of forms. The third stage explores the reasons behind his endorsement of Pierre Soulages. According to Badiou, Soulages’s work creates an idea of infinity, thereby uttering the command of Badiou’s Ethics of Truth, “Continue.”
