AB - By reconstructing the evolutionary process of individual classifier in Chinese, This paper found that:(1)the individual classifier in Chinese started from imitating the frame “yi dou jiu” and motivated by analogy in form,(2) “mei” and “ge” was borrowed, not grammatized, as universal substitute classifiers to meet the expression need at different certain stage in the process,(3)the evolutionary process of individual classifier in Chinese was dominated by the mechanism of language selection.
