ABSTRACT

Writers since the late of 19th century not only examined emancipation of females and reformation of society through further exploring the special life of prostitutes at the bottom of society and their multi-human nature, but also attached great importance to moulding high-grade prostitutes in their writing---social butterflies characterized by individual glamour of strong feminism. Indeed, the features of modernism, dissipation and rebellion expressed in the image of social butterflies exactly run counter to the features of the image of prostitutes at the bottom of society marked by poverty, adherenceto convention and helplessness, demonstrating sharp contrast in the image of two different kinds of prostitutes. Apart from showing the profoundness of writers in their analysis of issues on females, it also denotes the significance of such females as social butterflies in the culture of China in modern times.
