ABSTRACT

As the first piece of Old Tales Retold, ‘Mending the Heaven’ is Lu Xu’s first work trying to rewrite the historical issues. It is obviously, through reading the text, the content of the novel echoes some of the columns published in ‘Sui Gan Lu’ in New Youth. Using the tales of Nv Wa as the narrative theme, Lu Xu put the old Chinese society in the background of great changes and revolution era with a metaphor method. Meanwhile, he criticized the bad habits of Chinese, such as bearing children without educating them, the ritual of looking for the God, sticking to the quintessence of Chinese culture and abusing the scientific knowledge, through retelling the story of Nv Wa’s creating the human being and mending the sky. The conclusion of this paper is the reason Lu Xun wrote ‘Mending the Heaven’ in 1922 is to show his regret feeling to the ceasing of New Youth and the splitting of the revolutionary camp.
