ABSTRACT

on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and China, Korea-China relations are being tested as anti-Chinese and anti-Korean sentiment. Conflicts between the two countries, which have made rapid progress in economic exchanges since establishing diplomatic ties, are intensifying in the political, historical, and cultural fields that have been relatively neglected. The impact of news reports on the public in understanding the other country is absolute. Therefore, this paper analyzes the translation patterns of Chinese news by media companies in the Korean media and examines how this report correlates with the formation of anti-Chinese sentiment. To this end, the Chosun Ilbo and Hankyoreh newspaper articles representing conservative and progressive ideologies in Korea compared the translation patterns of the two newspapers on the same issue. In a specific way, the top three negative perceptions, such as the COVID-19 outbreak, THAAD retaliation, Korea-China history, and cultural conflict (Northeast process), were analyzed to analyze the difference in frame formation, heading, and vocabulary selection according to anti-China narratives. As a result, in the case of the Chosun Ilbo, all articles related to China are reported based on anti-Chinese narratives, and in the case of the Hankyoreh newspaper, it was striving to objectively analyze, solve, and present alternatives for each case. Given the media's influence on bilateral relations, future translation reports should reduce antipathy as much as possible and strive to write objective and friendly reports.
