ABSTRACT

Rhetoric is one of the oldest disciplines in the world that originated in ancient Greece, and was created not simply to study the techniques and tricks of persuasion, but to create a system to realize community development and social justice. Rhetoric is a traditional study that originated in the West, but its core, ‘persuasion’, has so far been recognized as a very important ability. This study aims to expand the subject of rhetoric research, which was limited to speeches, to prose with an important value of the times, and analyze it from a rhetorical perspective, and to study Yanfu’s (1854-1921), a Chinese intellectual. “About rapid changes in the world” is an article that persuades the reader of his views on the path to a true wealth and strength while at the same time bearing the anguish and longing of intellectuals toward the salvation from the crisis of the country. In ancient times, the importance of rhetoric has emerged due to the development of a participatory democratic political system, but in modern society, individuals themselves have become a brand, and the ability to persuade others by expressing their opinions in various forms and platforms such as speeches, prose, interviews, and social network posts is increasingly emphasized. This study is meaningful in that it expands the research subject limited to speeches into prose with important value of the times, analyzes it from a rhetorical perspective, and further applies to modern persuasion.
