ABSTRACT

Luxury was not a universal virtue for a long time in ancient China. Luxury must presuppose the power to mobilize enormous funds and labor, and it was originally centered on very few classes. While their luxury was consumed in a way that relieved their extremely private desires, far more people were forced to accept frugality as a virtue. In this study, the luxury aspects of ancient Chinese described in Taepyeong Gwanggi ․ Luxury were analyzed by dividing them into ‘the more, the better’ and ‘the dragon wars, the tiger battles’ that is, volume luxury and competitive luxury. The military figures described in Taepyeong Gwanggi ․ Luxury showed off their superiority with as much quantity as possible, and it can be seen that the fierce competition to beat the opponent was their face, which was more important than life. The luxury aspects of ‘the more, the better’ and ‘the dragon wars, the tiger battles’ are ongoing and are the basis for understanding China's consumption culture.
