ABSTRACT

Shang Shu, the oldest classic of Chinese nation, is one of the most essential media and carriers of the core values of the nation. Throughout history, there have been many interpretations both domestically and internationally. Now in the context of Postmodernism, under the influence and constraints of mass industrial culture, Martin Palmer, the contemporary British sinologists, translated Shang Shu, dispelling the ideological and cultural load of the original text, as well as its connotation, which led to the disappearance of the sense of distance between English readers and the version of this classic. Palmer’s version presents some features of Postmodernism texts, such as simplification, simulacrum, flattening and the disappearance of the depth of the interpretation of the classic, and it has a low level of fidelity to the original text, which deviates from translation ethics and is to some extent detrimental to English readers' true and complete understanding of Shang Shu. This study has important implications for the translation of Chinese classics and telling Chinese stories well, as well as promoting the dissemination of authentic Chinese culture.
