ABSTRACT

At the beginning of the 20th century, the May Fourth New Culture Movement emerged under the influence of Western modern enlightenment ideas. Although the old superstition that fully affirmed Chinese tradition has been abolished, it has to some extent created a new superstition of blind worship of Western civilization. Liang Shuming publicly expressed his cultural views and self-awareness in his Eastern and Western Cultures and Philosophies. Taking this point as a starting point, combined with Liang’s early growth background, practical context, and social background at that time, he broke through the separation of space and time, sorted out his enlightenment of thought and the transformation of thought in difficult situations. Based on this point, the dynamics, twists and turns, and tension between Liang’s thoughts and actions are presented. Realizing that progressive and conservative views are not simple opposites and separations under binary thinking, we should think more openly and dialectically, avoiding the shielding brought by the evaluation methods of simplification and romanticization of ideas and thinkers.
