ABSTRACT

Exploring the various themes in The Drum Singers reveals Lao She’s attitude towards modernity and traditional culture. It can be said that this reflects Lao She’s comprehensive understanding of ‘modernity and tradition’ following the Sino-Japanese War period. In this work, Lao She sought to dispel the orientalist prejudices held by Americans towards Chinese culture and to introduce contemporary China to them. However, the ballads(Drum Song) portrayed in the work is also a traditional Chinese art form, which reflects how Lao She perceives modern China. During this period, Lao She posited that tradition was not fated to be eradicated by the new era, but rather, it could adapt and evolve within it. The relationship between the two protagonists, Fang Baoqing and his daughter Fang Xiulian, epitomizes the concept of ‘cultural inheritance’. He illustrates through the transformation of Fang Xiulian that traditional culture is capable of adapting to the times, and in doing so, perpetuates ‘cultural inheritance’.
