ABSTRACT

This study analyzes 439 masterpieces of classical Chinese love poetry using digital humanities methodologies. The selected poems were compiled from seven anthologies, focusing on those included in at least two collections. Most masterpieces originated during the Tang and Song dynasties, with poets such as Li Shangyin, Zhu Shuzhen, Li Bai, and Bai Juyi identified as prominent contributors. Notably, Du Fu’s Moonlit Night and Li Shangyin’s Untitled were featured in all seven anthologies, underscoring their status as exemplary works that highlight the genealogy of Chinese love poetry. An N-gram analysis, including unigram and bigram frequency analysis, revealed that love is frequently expressed through the bigram ‘相思(mutual longing)’. Topic modeling based on bigrams demonstrated that classical Chinese love poetry explores themes of longing and suffering. A comparison of refined and vernacular styles indicated that vernacular love poetry exhibited a more melancholic tone than its refined counterparts. Additionally, the historical evolution of the genre, as observed through the top five bigrams across nine historical periods, confirmed that the genealogy of classical Chinese love poetry was established during the Tang and Five Dynasties. These findings were corroborated by cosine similarity analysis, providing robust evidence for the study's conclusions.
