ABSTRACT

As a basic word in modern Chinese, ‘zhen’ has become a common object in ontological research and Chinese language teaching research. However, the studies still encounter certain shortcomings, particularly in explaining the students’ errors. Based on prior research results, this article analyzes the nature and characteristics of adverb usages of ‘zhen’, and believes that it is a modal adverb and does not have the usage as a degree adverb. The functions expressed by ‘zhen’ can be divided into two types, confirmation and exclamation. The former confirms that a situation is true, while the latter exclaims that a situation exceeds the speaker's expectations. Due to the nature of exclamatory sentences, the situation expressed by the sentence must be something that the speaker has personally experienced, and the situation must be very significant or noteworthy. Therefore, it is easy to mislead us into misunderstanding that ‘zhen’ is a degree adverb. According to the comparison between ‘zhen’ and ‘tai’, ‘duo’, it can be counted to be a typical marker of exclamatory sentences.
