ABSTRACT

Wisdom Literature in the Bible dose not seem to be recognized as equal as its other parts to most of preachers, though they officially confess it as God’s words. Only a few passages from it are limitedly used as sermon texts. It concentrates on human beings, dealing with human beings, their life and wisdom rather than Israel as God’s people, His saving history and events. Therefore it is often thought that it is weaker and less important than the Law or the Prophets in terms of divine authority. It is particularly the fact that the book of Ecclesiastes is generally overlooked and ignored as preaching texts except a few passages. However, this article argues that it can be fully used within church. In order to reach its contention it deals with 1) its authorship, date and its historical background, 2) misunderstanding factors and 3) its messages. In conclusion this article shows that Ecclesiastes is not the book to avoid and ignore, but the very book to give full and realistic messages to modern readers and believers with doubt in such uncertain and unstable environment as present.
