ABSTRACT

I have attempted in this paper to review the developments for Israel’s self-awareness as a people in relation with other peoples und to explore its relationship with the nations. From the biblical point of view, Israel is not more in number than any other peoples. Its existence ist very small. Only through YHWH’ love it ist selected. The purpose of the divine selection lays on the observation of the torah which in the covenant contract on the mount Sinai YHWH has promulgated for israel. In regard to the nations, the people traced dwelling in his land securely, without the afraid of enemies’ attacks(Lev 25:15ff.). This concept plays important roll in relationship with the nations. I have found multi-layered conceptions. First, israel-centric: there are mentions that see the nations negatively. Second, in the positive viewpoint to the nations they as pilgrims shall come to the mount Zion in order to learn the Torah of YHWH. Third, nations-centric: the scattered Israel among the nations enlightening them with the instruction oder bringing the light into the nation. In this process Israel itself become the light for the peoples. Comparing with the above conceptions, the last model is transcendant. It is so called “the blessed nations of all”. All the nations that had hustled Israel in the past become the blessed blessing. This Idea leads to forsee the Pauline Gospel. In sum, the fundamental thoughts that lays in background of all the conceptions is that the fates of the nations ist depending on their behavior to the selected people. The status of Israel would be never abolished(Rom 11:12,18). Its existence remains a revelation of God in the human history. In the coming future of the mankind the values of the Torah shall be democratized among all the nations. So they shall be changed to a new land.
