The Study on Zhang Xiaotian’s Novella The Open Internal

ABSTRACT

As a contemporary writer and realist, Zhang Xiaotian contributes great amount of charistaristic works to the contemporary literature with his profound grounding in surprising skill and his outstanding literary talent. He gained achievement in various novels, which characterized specialties, especially in the creation of novella which was burst with unceasing exploration in life and art. The richful aesthetic image and profound thoughts composite his unique perspective in novella creation. In 1982, he published The Open Internal in the first issue of the literature publication Contemporary. This novella was quickly spread to young generation and gained great popularity. There was a different strong sensation with both good reviews and criticism among the readers. This work was regarded as a controversial work in the 1980s, but as time goes by, it was forgotten for a long time. This paper aims to analyze the significance of this novella and investigate the thought of personages, that is created by him, in the social reality of the historical revolution. Furthermore, this paper aims to analyze why it has been neglected and criticized. After analysis, found that Zhang Xiaotian was focusing on the performance of human nature, portray psychological, grasping live detail. He portrayed these personages with blood and flesh and distinctive individual character. He overcame the trammels of literary works which tend to over simplify and generalize, and he portrayed the personages from life and emotion details.
