ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the operation of social networking services (SNS) by twelve academic libraries at four-year comprehensive universities located in Busan, based on user engagement, and to propose directions for improving future operations. To this end, the official SNS accounts of each library were accessed directly, and posts and user engagement data (likes and comments) were collected from the date of account creation through March 14, 2026. The accounts were classified by platform—Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, KakaoTalk Channel, and others—and examined in terms of the operational purpose, content format, and posting frequency of each account. User engagement was calculated by dividing the sum of likes and comments by the number of posts. Based on the calculated values, accounts were categorized into three types—discovery, experience, and exploration—and operational patterns were compared and analyzed by platform and by library. The main findings are as follows. First, the volume of posting activity, such as the number of posts and upload frequency, generally showed no clear relationship with user engagement; increasing the number of posts alone was therefore insufficient to secure user engagement. Second, on most platforms, the operational purpose was heavily skewed toward information delivery, such as library introductions and news announcements, and tended to cluster in these categories. This study is significant in that it directly collected user engagement data across multiple SNS platforms and cross-compared them using engagement as a quantitative indicator, thereby providing foundational data for future research on regional-level SNS operation in academic libraries.
