ABSTRACT

This research aims to analyze mapping processes and map contents of the 1:100,000‐scale Manchurian map made by Imperial Japan using 1,048 map sheets recently republished in Japan. The Manchurian survey for modern and large‐scale map‐making by Imperial Japan was started by the outbreak of Chino‐Japanese War and lasted until 1930s. The General Staff Headquarters and its subordinates such as Land Survey Board, Kwantung Army, the Headquarters for Northern China Front were involved in the mapping processes. The map covers Manchuria and some part of Russian territory extending up to 135°30´E in the east and 55°N in the north. In regard to the technical aspect of the mapping the Bessel 1841 ellipsoid and polyhedric projection were adopted. Such contents as transportation routes, physiography, vegetation, land use were represented in detail compared to other items. In addition many and various military items were shown and the terms such as “Military Top Secret” or “Secret” were stamped on the sheet, which mean that the map were used for military purpose.
