ABSTRACT

This paper intends to give a comparative account of how the two women theatre artists revisit the character of Lady Macbeth on stage: Han Tae-Sook’s 2016 Changgeuk version and Tian Mansha’s 2001 Sichuan opera version. Han and Tian stand as role models for emerging women artists who have their works recognized around the world. Their adaptations have a demonstration of how Shakespeare could be successfully combined with classical performing arts of Korea and China. Their affiliation with traditional forms is designed to stage the sleepwalking scene to maximum dramatic effect. Han’s retelling and Tian’s capture the frightful image of fear and guilt when the barrier between sleeping and waking is broken down entirely. Both of them begin with the moment in which the truth about Lady Macbeth’s commitment to regicide makes itself known to her attendants. They also end with the moment of decision that she needs to eventually commit suicide. Han and Tian underscore the nature of horrible truths and their effects on the subconscious urge of troubled mind. Their employment of traditional theatre arts offers the self-reflexivity and expressiveness to the character of Lady Macbeth. cbeth on Stage: Cases of Productions in Korea and China
