ABSTRACT

This study aims to enhance understanding of the Internet use by elderly people in Korea. It collected data from 336 people aged over 60 in Korea as a sample, using an online survey. It used concepts of gratification sought (GS) and gratification obtained (GO) in order to study the psychological aspects of elderly Internet users. First of all, as a result of analyzing the difference between GS and GO in 19 items, it was found out that GO of elderly Internet users is higher than GS in 15 items and vice versa in four items that are related with information seeking. Second, GS is consisted of information, entertainment/partner and personal business factors, while GO comprises of information, entertainment/partner, personal business and cyber transaction factors. Third, occupation, education, interest in science and technology, new media adoption, external orientation, interest in community and frequency of Internet exposure have an effect on GS, while the factors affecting GO include external orientation, interest in community, interest in science and technology, new media adoption, education, ability to use the Internet and frequency of Internet exposure.
