ABSTRACT

This study is a descriptive study on the relationship between the paging service and changes in the communication structure in Korea during the 1990s. Although the paging service succeeded in terms of the number of subscribers, it could not prepare for challenges of emerging technologies such as mobile phones. In the 1990s, the paging service had a significant advantage in expanding social networks among individuals. More specifically, it expanded individuals' personal relationships into stable social networks in terms of its spatial scope. As a result, the paging service changed structures of social communication, promoting development of youth culture and symbolic communication.
