ABSTRACT

This paper aims to establish a theoretical foundation for understanding the reification of intimacy in modern capitalist societies through the concept of artificial intimacy. To this end, the paper undertakes the following three tasks. First, it defines artificial intimacy as generation of pseudo-intimacy or fulfillment of desires for intimate relationships or related experiences through artificial means created by certain technologies and clarifies how artificial intimacy is related to intimacy and intimate relationships in general. Second, it demonstrates that the moments of artificial intimacy are inherent in the very nature of intimate relationships themselves, and examines how the development of media since the 20th century has led to the widespread production and consumption of artificial intimacy products. Third, this paper argues that the emergence of artificial intimacy products based on advanced artificial intelligence and robotics is likely to bring about a fundamental structural transformation in the entire domain of intimacy, and that this development represents the culmination of reified intimacy.
