ABSTRACT

This paper analyzes Marion Bierry’s 2007 production of L’Illusion Comique, examining how the performance’s various elements deconstruct and reconstruct the multi-layered metadramatic boundaries inherent in Corneille’s original text. It explores the process of Bierry’s production sensorially expanding the text’s potential, with a particular focus on the characters’ constant “role-playing.” The second section analyzes how a stable illusion is constructed through verse dialogue, classical scenography, and recurring music. The third section examines the subsequent process of this classical order being gradually deconstructed, leading to the nullification of all layers of illusion. This analysis concludes that Bierry’s L’Illusion Comique renews the form and senses of the classical text, demonstrating that life and theater, truth and fiction, are inextricably entangled. This study’s significance lies in its departure from traditional text-centric discussions to focus on the sensory layers of performance, particularly auditory performativity. By applying Brandon LaBelle’s concept of “acoustic territory” alongside metadrama theory, this paper discusses the process through which the audience aurally experiences and reconstructs the boundaries of metadrama.
