AB - This study developed and implemented a picture book-based group counseling program as a field teacher-participatory counseling practicum to promote preservice elementary teachers' psychological independence, well-being, and competencies in student guidance and counseling. Using an action research approach, the study examined the implementation process and the educational meanings of participants' experiences. Participants were 173 third-year preservice elementary teachers at C National University of Education in Chungbuk Province, South Korea, who participated in the program between 2022 and 2025. The program was continuously refined through iterative cycles of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Data were collected from reflective journals, session reports, and program evaluation reports and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The findings revealed that the program promoted participants' self-understanding, understanding of others, psychological well-being, and emotional growth. The involvement of experienced in-service elementary teachers helped participants understand student guidance and counseling within authentic school contexts and strengthened their confidence in counseling practice. Furthermore, the cyclical action research process continuously incorporated participants' feedback and contextual needs, leading to the refinement of the program and expanding the educational use of picture books in teacher education. This study suggests that a field teacher-participatory picture book-based group counseling program can serve as a practical teacher education model that integrates emotional growth with counseling competence. It also provides implications for the sustainable implementation of field-based counseling practicum programs in teacher education.
