ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to explore new horizons for research and practice in moral education through an examination of the narrative perspective, which focuses on the relationship between narrative and morality. The narrative perspective is grounded in the experiential dimension of comprehension and attends to narrativity as a constitutive feature of human cognition and existence. Within this perspective, the problem of transmission constitutes a central concern, particularly in instructional situations where narrative function and moral inquiry occur simultaneously. The findings of this study indicate that the narrative perspective raises important issues concerning the aims of moral education, the universality of moral norms, and ethical relativism. Addressing these issues requires special attention to the pedagogical narrative. Furthermore, Moral Education needs to establish a philosophy of instruction and a corresponding theory of teaching grounded in a robust theoretical framework capable of explaining the meaning and value of narrative function in classroom practice. Such an undertaking would further strengthen the tradition and academic standing of Moral Education research in the Republic of Korea.
