In case of class II malocclusion, mandible has morphological characteristics such as size and position. To investigate morphological characteristics of mandible, most study has been done in indirect measurement using cephalogram. Recently, it is possible to measure directly Three dimensional skeletal model reconstructed from computed tomography images. This study aimed to know characteristics of mandible in class II malocclusion, analyzing Three dimensional mandible models of class I and II malocclusion which are acquired from computed tomography images of 80 cadavers. In open bite type of class II malocclusion, the size of mandible had no difference from class I malocclusion but the sagittal ramus angle and condylar angle were smaller 3 degree than class I. These findings inform that the ramus and condylar process of open bite type of class II malocclusion stand more erectly than class I and then the mandible is placed posteriorly. In deep bite type of class II malocclusion, the length of mandible was shorter 4 mm and, the sagittal ramus angle and condylar angle were larger 5 degree than class I. These findings, short length of mandible and more lying ramus and condylar process, make the mandible in the feature of deep bite of class II malocclusion. In comparison of past issued articles which used cehpalometry mainly, the values of measurements agree partially. It is the differences of measuring points and methods to make inconsistency between indirect measurement like cephalometric study and 3 dimensionally direct measurement like this study. To increase accuracy of Three dimensionally direct measurement, standardization of measuring points and method for the measurement is required.

We report a case of bilateral bridges of atlas of a Korean atlas and accompanying variation of the course of the left suboccipital nerve that was observed during the practice of the human anatomy in Seonam university, college of medicine. Bridges of atlas across the groove for the vertebral artery run inferomedially from the posterior margins of the superior articular processes to the posterior margins of the grooves. Widths of the narrowest middle portions of the bridges are 5.05 mm at the left and 0.7 mm at the right. Superior and inferior widths of left bridge are 11.6 mm and 10.9 mm, and of the right are 4.45 mm and 4.65 mm respectively. Cross-sectional areas of the foramina formed by bridges of atlas are 34.7mm2 at the left and 29.3mm2 at the right. These sizes are much smaller than the sizes of the transverse foramina of the atlas at each side, but diameters of the second and third portions of the left vertebral artery are same as 4.3 mm. At the junction between the left bridge and the posterior arch distinct suture line was observed. Because of the relatively wide bridge, the left suboccipital nerve runs more laterally than the right. It turns to the posterior, pierces the obliquus capitis inferior muscle, and branches out to adjacent suboccipital muscles. Branch to the rectus capitis posterior muscles obliquely cross over the suboccipital triangle to these muscle

Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) serves as an extracellular signal triggering apoptosis in tumor cells. To characterize the molecular events involved in TRAIL-induced apoptotic signaling, we investigated the role of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) in the apoptosis using HeLa cells. Here we show that TRAIL pronounced ERK1/2 activation through a tyrosine kinase-dependent mechanism, subsequently elevated anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein levels. Pretreatment with Genistein, an inhibitor of tyrosine kinase, significantly attenuated ERK1/2 activation and enhanced cell death. Moreover, inhibition of ERK1/2 with PD98059 promoted apoptotic cell death through the down-regulation of ERK1/2 activity and Bcl-2 protein levels. Taken together, our results suggest that the activation of ERK1/2 via tyrosine kinase pathway plays a protective role as the mechanism of cellular defense through the up-regulation of Bcl-2 protein levels in TRAIL-induced apoptosis.
