Case Study on Improving the Teaching and Learning Activities to Increase the Educational Effectiveness of Dissection Practice

The purpose of this study is to share examples of improved teaching and learning activities among medical students who participated in the dissection practice course, and to suggest improvement measures by surveying medical students’ perceptions. A total of 139 data were collected using an online survey method for second-year premedical students who were required to complete an dissection practice course. The data were analyzed using the t-test, paired t-test, and IPA techniques. The importance and utilization of the 8 teaching and learning activities were all relatively high, and a significant difference was found between importance and utilization. In terms of gender, female students were significantly lower than male students only in the utilization of ‘video on how to use dissection instruments’ and ‘incision with artificial leather’. ‘Sharing prior to practice what he/she will dissect’, and ‘incision with artificial leather’ were more important to general students than course retaking students. ‘Incision with artificial leather’ was significantly more utilized by general students than by course retaking students. As a result of the IPA analysis, the maintenance area (quadrant 1) with the high importance and utilization was ‘reading of a eulogy’ and ‘explanation after practice what he/she dissected’. The area of concentrated effort(quadrant 2) with the high importance and low utilization was ‘video on how to use dissection instruments’ and ‘incision with artificial leather’. Area targeted for improvement(quadrant 3) with both low importance and low utilization includes ‘orientation’, ‘sharing prior to practice what he/she will dissect’, and ‘table touring’. Status quo area (quadrant 4) with low importance and high utilization included the activity ‘writing the practice results’. As a way to improve dissection teaching and learning activities, it was suggested to provide a clear orientation including the purpose of each teaching and learning activity, to strengthen interaction between instructors and students, and to provide programs for peer-to-peer educational support. In domestic medical humanities education, along with the need for narrative education, narrative competence is emphasized as crucial elements that future doctors should possess for their clinical practice. Narrative medicine, originating in the United States and the United Kingdom, has garnered attention in the medical community. However, there is a lack of research on the specific educational methods and the application of narrative medicine in domestic medical education. This study presents the points of application of narrative medicine for death education in anatomical practice education, with the purpose of developing narrative competences in medical education and suggesting ways to apply narrative medicine. The applications of narrative medicine as death education in anatomical practice education are as follows: First, the application of philosophical discourse based on narrative questions. Second, the application of directive writing based on subjective and intuitive observations of the cadaver’s body parts. Third, the application of story therapy through literature and artwork. In this study, the narrative medicine as death education in anatomical practice education supplements the limitations of biomedicine-centered objective elements and rationality-centered positivist medical education. Narrative reading and writing develops narrative competence by incorporating medical humanities elements, such as creativity, subjectivity, and more, into medicine. Additionally, this study introduced specific educational methods for narrative medicine in anatomical practice education, incorporating elements of medical humanities. This study’s contribution is its integrated approach to medical education, combining natural science and humanities education in response to the requirement for human-centered medicine in medical education. Through the use of narrative medicine, this study suggests another valuable educational approach aligned with medical humanities education by recognizing various human factors anticipated in future medical settings.

Survey Study on Practical Anatomy Education for Clinical Pathology Students

A clinical laboratory scientist is a type of medical technician who performs diagnostic and physiological tests and anatomical and pathological tests. In the department of clinical laboratory science where they are trained, practical education in anatomy is essential for understanding the structure and function of the human body. However, the current educational approach consists of theory-oriented classes that rely on simple memorization, highlighting the necessity for practical anatomy education utilizing cadavers to achieve higher-quality learning. This study investigates the necessity of anatomy practical education in department of clinical laboratory science and aims to contribute to its systematic constitution. A survey was conducted with 69 students from a department of clinical laboratory science at a university who participated in an anatomy practical program at K University in Daegu. The survey aimed to investigate the effectiveness of anatomy practical education, appropriate teaching methods and time, and the necessity of its integration into the standard curriculum. The survey consisted of 13 multiple-choice questions, 2 multiple-response questions, and 2 open-response questions. According to the results, all 69 students expressed interest in anatomy practical, with 94.2% stating that it should be included in the regular curriculum. 88.4% of students responded that utilizing cadavers is beneficial as an educational method. The most preferred timing for effective practical education was the second year (53.6%), with 60 minutes (33.3%) identified as the appropriate duration for pre-education, and 2~3 hours (46.4%) for practical sessions. The systems and areas students expressed a desire to observe more closely were the digestive system (17.2%) and the head region (17.6%), respectively. Through this study, the demand and necessity for practical anatomy education were identified, and it is necessary to improve the quality of anatomy practice education by researching practical methods that can enhance the effectiveness of anatomy education for clinical laboratory science students.
