ABSTRACT

This study aimed to conduct an in-depth examination of the life experiences of a researcher who grew up with an alcoholic father, becoming a research participant themselves to explore what it is like to live as a child of an alcoholic. As an autobiographical narrative inquiry, the research subject is both the researcher and a single research participant, examining the experiences of living as a child of an alcoholic and exploring the meaning of those life experiences. Reflective writing was composed as field texts, and the interpretation of these texts considered three-dimensional inquiry points—temporality, sociality, and place. The experiences of living as a children of alcoholics were expressed in the themes of ‘Living as a children of alcoholics,’ ‘Recognizing and facing the children of alcoholics,’ and ‘Existing as myself’, Someone else’s daily life became an incident to me, and I experienced the conflict of ambivalence without knowing that my father was an alcoholic. I tried to be a good person to gain the approval of my mother and others, and I tried not to become an addict. I found meaning in life through expressing myself and respecting the life I was given and the experiences I had lived. This study explored the life experiences of children from families with alcohol addiction from multiple perspectives by having a researcher who grew up in such a family participate in the research themselves, revealing and examining their own experiences. Through this, it is expected to serve as basic data for expanding in-depth understanding of children raised in alcoholics families and providing practical psychological support.
