ABSTRACT

Ancient trade ports were intended for the gathering and circulation of goods but some were also accompanied by crafts workshops, the presence of which can provide valuable information on the nature of these trade ports. In order to gain a better understanding of the ancient Korean portof- trade, Neukdo, this paper examined, in detail, the nature of the crafts activities that may have taken place, with particular focus on iron and pottery production. In addition, examples of other regions and time periods in which crafts production took place at trade harbors were also examined; this was done in order to construct a heuristic tool through which the phenomenon observed at Neukdo could be better understood. Based on the results of the study, three different scenarios were identified for crafts production at trade harbors. The first was the production of goods that were required is association with maritime activities. The second was the production of goods generated through the introduction of foreign goods and technologies, which were ultimately intended for local consumption. The third was the production of goods as trade items for maritime trade. These three scenarios provide a basis for carrying out future research on crafts production at Neukdo.
