ABSTRACT

Historical geographical research of Sillas ‘Bukyotong Street’ Genji been limited by lack of primary data. However, this paper posits that this limitation can be overcome to an extent by the following three methods. The first is a comparison between China (Tang) and Japan's road traffic system in the same ancient East Asian culture. The second is through study of materials obtained from other eras in Korea. Third is interdisciplinary study with adjoining fields such as history and archeology. In this study, the first and second methods are used with the case study of Shillaciplinary study with adjoinadjoined with the international traffic linking to China and the Silk Road. Through the Yellow sea lane from Tang to Shilla, Janggujin in Hwanhae province was an important official landing point for envoys especially during the period of unified Shilla. On the other hand, the route from Wanggyeong, the capital of Shilla to Janggujin is quite similar to that of Joseon dynasty with some exceptions stemming from differences in city and summit location. This research can be linked to future studies in micro-geography and archaeology.
