ABSTRACT

This study looked at how cross-strait marriage began and changed in the context of the history of cross-strait relations and the migration experience of marriage migrants. Cross-strait marriage, which refers to the marriage migration between the Chinese and Taiwanese, has emerged since 1987 with the opening of the Taiwan-China exchange. Previous studies on the history of cross-strait marriage have suggested how policies related to cross-strait marriage have changed in the context of cross-strait exchange. However, this study attempts to assert that cross-strait marriage can be divided according to the time of migration and marriage type of the 'Mainland spouse'. Early cross-strait marriage is characterized by the coupling of the veterans and Mainland spouses who are from the same hometown. The middle cross-strait marriage began with the entry of Taiwanese businessmen (Taishang) into China, and when their children become school age, they settled in Taiwan. 'New' cross-strait marriage is a recent phenomenon. They are married and living in another country. This differentiation shows that 'Mainland Spouse' is not a single category and can be divided into at least three groups, depending on their migration context, motives and family type. This cross-strait marriage case suggests that the longer the history of marriage migration, the different divisions may occur depending on the migration background within the marriage migrants group .
