ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to explore the status of the Korean language as a foreign language by reviewing Mongolia’s national curriculum, major laws and regulations related to education, and to analyze the practice cases of Korean language education in the 23rd School. According to Mongolia’s foreign language curriculum, the first foreign language is English, and the second is Russian. English education begins in the fifth grade of elementary school, and Russian begins in the seventh grade. Recently, Korean language education is also actively occurring in Mongolia as a social demand for a third foreign language. 4,157 learners from 24 schools are studying Korean. Among them, the 23rd School is the first foreign language specialized school in Mongolia, where 463 students from nine classes are still learning Korean. Korean language education begins in third grade, faster than English education in the national curriculum, and four Korean language teachers instruct students. The textbook used at this time is ‘Standard Korean,’ a customized textbook for Mongolian learners. Mongolian elementary, middle and high school Korean language education should be established in the future in line with the national curriculum, and should enhance the expertise of Korean language teachers and promote Korean language education in cooperation with the government, the school and the Korean language education community.
