ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to classify the institutional perception on welfare·economy·politics systems of people from post-socialism countries and to investigate which country cluster’s or country’s people are likely to belong to a certain type. Using the Life in Transition Survey (LiTS) data provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) , sets of institutional perception of 12,789 people from 11 transition countries (5 CIS countries including Russia and 4 Middle Asian countries, and 6 East European countries) were categorized into 3 groups by latent class analysis (LCA) . It was confirmed that the sets of institutional perception were divided into three groups, arbitrarily named ‘Transition immature,’ ‘Transition ongoing,’ and ‘Transition mature.’ Next, pairs of chi-square independence test and ordered logistic regression analysis were conducted to test whether people from a certain country cluster or country are more likely to fall into a specific group. In fact, people from Eastern European than CIS are more likely to fall into a specific group, and almost all other countries than Russia are more likely to support a planned economy and an authoritarian political system. This indicates that the so-called ‘Soviet legacy’ remains disproportionate within the Post-Socialism Countries.
