ABSTRACT

After the dissolution of the USSR, Bukharan (Bukharian) Jews of Central Asia emigrated mainly to Israel and the United States and diaspora communities have participated in transnational networks based on cultural exchange and social relations. The centerpiece of the Bukharan Jewish diaspora network is the World Congress of Bukharian Jews, headquartered in Israel. The community of Bukharan Jews in Israel, the historical homeland and the center of Jewish religion and culture, plays a central and significant role in diaspora networks. The Bukharan Jewish community in the United States systematically implement various activities related to the life of transnational communities of the Bukharan Jewry. The fact that Bukharan Jews are a branch of Persian Jewry in Central Asia strengthens their identity as Mizrahi Jews whose cultural heritage is different from that of Ashkenazi Jews who make up the majority of Jews in the former USSR. The present work aims to examine the characteristics of migration and settlement of Bukharan Jews in the United States and Israel and to investigate the impact of transnational connection between diaspora communities on formation of Bukharan Jewish identity through analysis of diasporic media.
