ABSTRACT

This research aims to analyze North Korean letter style theory and design in order to explore the significance and visual cultural characteristics of their calligraphy letter style within a historical context. Since the 1980s, the importance of leader’s handwriting has emphasized as the concepts and types of fonts have been formed and systematized. As an extension of the ‘Juche’ (주체) aesthetics, which contains socialist content in a national form, the party’s voice was visualized in calligraphy letter style and delivered to the public. Today, North Korean letter styles are diversifying with more than 700 types. Analyzing North Korean calligraphic letter style provides a starting point in interpreting the changing flow and experiences of North Korean visual culture.
