ABSTRACT

This study reconstructs the rhyme base of the non-entering tone syllables of the Jiang and Dang rhyme classes in Old Mandarin as [-ɑŋ] /-ɔŋ/ and that of the same syllables in Middle Mandarin as [-ɑŋ] /-aŋ/. It also reconstructs the rhyme base of the entering tone syllables of the Jiang and Dang rhyme classes in Old Mandarin literary pronunciation as [-ɑk] /-ɔk/ (or [-ɑʔ] /-ɔʔ/), that of the same syllables in Middle Mandarin literary pronunciation as [-ɔ] /-ɔ/ (or [-ə] /-ɔ/), and that of the same syllables in Middle Mandarin colloquial pronunciation as [-ɑw] /-aw/. Furthermore, it examines their diachronic sound changes the syllable finals of the Jiang (江) and Dang (宕) rhyme classes from Late Middle Chinese through Old Mandarin and Middle Mandarin to Modern Pekingese. This study makes use of the Korean phonetic transcriptions of pre-modern Mandarin pronunciations of Chinese characters in order to determine the pre-modern Mandarin pronunciations of the syllables of the Jiang and Dang rhyme classes .
