The purpose of this study is to analyze On-dal's internal world by quoting Jung's Analytic Psychology as for the fairy tale Idiot On-dal, and to grasp the internal structure that the work itself has through this.
Before meeting Princess Pyeonggang, On-dal grows with holding good nature of regarding life as precious in the middle of nature. Especially, he grows while living in the heart of a mountain together with 'Bau,' which is his shadow character. This image is what shows that On-dal's inside still remains in the state of babyhood without being differentiated ego and shadow amid unconsciousness. After meeting Princess Pyeonggang, On-dal not only escapes from mockery by forming persona, but also becomes a manful and brave general in Goguryeo. However, this is not On-dal's own desire, but is persona that was formed by Princess Pyeonggang. Princess Pyeonggang functions as On-dal's anima, thereby allowing him to succeed externally, but makes 'shadow' darker by allowing On-dal's own ego to be denied in a series of process that On-dal proceeds with making external success. In addition, Princess Pyeonggang makes persona and anima consistent, and rather allows On-dal to look away from his unconscious world, thereby devastating On-dal's internal world. On-dal's devastated internal world can be confirmed in the image of outrageous 'Bau,' which was met on a battlefield. On-dal recognizes his shadow by facing Bau on the battlefield and recognizes anima, thereby leading to self-actualization. However, he directly kills Bau, thereby being what ego kills shadow, resulting in ruining himself. This is embodied as what he is also killed by being shot with arrow after the death of Bau. Also, as Pyeonggang, who is anima, also commits suicide, On-dal's collapse is emphasized once again. Consequently, Princess Pyeonggang got married to On-dal and made On-dal's external success, but allows him not to take care of the internal world, thereby leading to a way of collapse in On-dal and herself. This is what emphasizes that one individual's self-actualization is more important than an individual's external success. The tragic conclusion in Idiot On-dal stresses importance of this self-actualization. In other words, this is a tragic story in which a success story of Princess Pyeonggang and Idiot On-dal has internal structure of being devastated and disappeared On-dal's internal world, and can be confirmed to be text of emphasizing an individual's self-actualization.
