ABSTRACT

Yishu Qu. (2020). A study on aspects of metaphor translation seen in the Korean-Chinese translation of 「자전거 도둑<Jajeongeo doduk> (The Bicycle Thief)」. This paper is significant in paying attention to metaphors in children’s literature each of which has been separately discussed in translation studies considering their distinctive features and importance. In particular, this study explores the aspects of metaphor translation seen in the Korean-Chinese translation of children’s literature focusing on the Korean fairy tale 「자전거 도둑<Jajeongeo doduk> (The Bicycle Thief)」 and its translated Chinese version《自行车小偷<zìxíngchē xiǎotōu> (The Bicycle Thief)》. In doing so, the methods for translating metaphoric expressions are categorized into the maintenance, variation, explanation, omission and addition of metaphors, and then their translation processes are inferred to understand how the methods are affected by linguistic, conceptual and cultural factors. As a result of the analysis, a model is presented to select applicable translation methods. The paper concludes that the metaphor translation seen in the Korean-Chinese translation of 「자전거 도둑<Jajeongeo doduk> (The Bicycle Thief)」 has multi-layered, interactive and subjectively active characteristics.
