AB - Ji young Lee (2022). Translation and Cultural Appropriation: A comparative analysis of the book reviews of Yu Hua’s work “The Seventh Day” in Korean and English. This article analyzes the reception of Yu Hua’s novel “The Seventh Day” in Korean and English from a comparative perspective, in the context of debates about the role of translation. Departing from Venuti’s theorization of cultural appropriation and tracing the main factors that have shaped the reception of the translations of the novel into Korean and English, it focuses on the case of “The Seventh Day” through an analysis of newspaper and magazine reviews published in Korea and the U.S. Issues discussed include the cultural differences in the reception towards the novel and the degree of interconnection between the cultural value and its reception at the transnational level. The case of “The Seventh Day” points to the preference of a family-oriented narrative in framing the novel for reception by a Korean readership, and the meta narratives on China that circulate in the West in framing the novel for reception by an American readership as the cultural discourses at work. This article identifies the importance of the theory that understands translation in terms of cultural appropriation. (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Korea)
