ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of students characteristics(reading, the frequency of delinquency, subject grades) and teachers characteristics(teachers enthusiasm, teachers teaching ability, learner-centered teaching method) on the citizenship of middle school students using latent class analysis. Gyeonggi Education Panel Study(GEPS) 2016(4th) data was used. A total of 3,033 responses were used after using the listwise deletion method. Of the 3,033 employed in this study, 1,443 (47.6%) were boys and 1,590 (52.4%) were girls. The results of the study are as follows. 1) students' citizenship was categorized into three latent classes; high, medium, low. 2) The highest proportion was the medium citizenship class, followed by the high citizenship class and the low citizenship class. 3) The higher the frequency of delinquency, the higher the probability of belonging to the medium or lower class than the class with higher citizenship. 4) Teachers characteristics increased the likelihood that students would belong to the high or medium citizenship class than the class with lower citizenship. In particular, the teachers enthusiasm had a positive effect on the students’citizenship. This study shows that the characteristics of teachers have a significant effect on students' citizenship and the importance of improving the environment around students to improve students' citizenship.
