ABSTRACT

This study presents the basic data of career psychological counseling and lifelong pedagogicalreality theory from the perspective of the Psychology of Working Theory (PWT) of the retirementanxiety adjustment process of middle-aged men in their 50s. For the purpose of this study,Strauss and Corbin's (1998) grounded theory research method was used. Participants in this studyrecruited 11 middle-aged men in their 50s who are currently employed in Seoul and themetropolitan area according to theoretical sampling. The question of this study is 'What is theexperience of the retirement anxiety adjustment process of middle-aged men in their 50s who arecurrently employed in a personal, social and cultural context?' As a result of analysis withgrounded theory, a total of 105 concepts, 40 subcategories, and 17 categories were derived. Inaddition, a model of the retirement anxiety adaptation process, which changes into four stages of‘a self-awareness period, a search period, a receptive period, and an adaptation period’, and acore category of ‘advancing toward maturity in old age through pain caused bydisconnection’was found. The results of this study were to help middle-aged men in their 50swho are currently employed in their retirement anxiety adjustment process and to understand theprocess of adaptation, and to grasp the realistic experiences of middle-aged men in their 50s whogrew up in the 1960s and 1970s, which has great significance. Theses results imply that agovernment-private policy support system should be prepared for them, taking into account thespecificity of being a middle-aged man in his 50s.
