ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the importance and performance of the role of instructors in the university's online classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and to derive implications for improving the online classes. In this study, the roles of instructors in the online classes were divided into professor designer, learning counselor, learning environment manager, interaction facilitator, learning evaluator, and learning information provider. The importance and performance of each domain were searched. This study surveyed 158 students taking online teaching profession courses such as Introduction to Education and Introduction to Special Education established at B University, located in the metropolitan area, in the first semester of the 2021 year. As a result of the study, first, the importance of the instructor’s role in the online classes were found to be in the order of learning environment manager, learning counselor, learning information provider, instruction designer, interaction facilitator, and learning evaluator. Second, it was found that there were significant differences in the importance and performance of the instructor’s role in online classes in all six areas and sub-categories for each area. Third, among the roles of instructor in the online classes, learning counselor, and learning environment manager were the areas of strength, and teaching designers and learning information providers were the areas of weakness. The results of this study suggest that the university authorities need to prepare a plan to support the instructor's role performance as an instruction designer by setting learning goals, organizing contents and content organization, inducing learning motivation, and establishing effective class participation plans. In addition, it is implied that the instructors need to continuously maintain their roles as counselors and managers by answering various inquiries related to online classes and introducting class participation and various learning activities. Based on the above contents, this study presented theoretical and practical implications for the role of instructors in online classes at universities.
