ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a parent grit measurement tool. Accordingly, the research questions were ‘What are the concepts and components of parental grit?' and ‘Whether the measurement tool of parental grit is valid.' The subjects of the study were 502 parents with children aged 4-10. In order to derive the concept of parent grit components and develop questions, 13 parents were interviewed for behavioral events, and experts were tested and evaluated for content validity and evaluated. With the collected data, the validity of the measurement tool was verified by exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and job validation. According to the findings, first, the definition of parental grit was ‘keeping parents interested in successful parental role learning, investing appropriate time and energy in parenting and education while maintaining a positive relationship with their children, and accepting positively and constantly striving for problems in unexpected parenting situations.’ Second, three constituent factors were derived: maintaining interest in parental learning, nurturing passion, and continuing effort, and 20 final questions. Third, it proved to be a reliable and valid tool by confirming the internal consistency and verifying the job offer's validity. This tool can be act as a self-evaluation tool for parental grit and development data for parental education programs.
