ABSTRACT

This article analyzes the images of BTS’ music videos produced in a storytelling way to reveal that ‘hospitality and solidarity’ are among the messages BTS is trying to deliver. Th is is also the work of interpreting the phenomenon in which BTS are called heroes or role models, not just idol singers. The images that appear repeatedly in storytelling music videos are individual pain, gestures toward each other, and community. Signaling to comein, extending a hand to lift a person who is lying down, and welcoming a person who has entered with open arms are all gestures that show hospitality and solidarity. Individuals buried in pain are healed and feel joy in the community due to these gestures. At first, the target they had to save was a friend they knew well and now in front of them. This is the absolute Other that Levinas said. However, as time goes by, their attention turns not to the other in front of them, but to the third person who is invisible but suff ering somewhere. BTS sings for someone who is suff ering from domestic violence and school violence. BTS has already surpassed popular idols. They gave a speech at the UN twice, met the US president, and responded to various interviews revealing their convictions. They not only express the essential message of this era through dance, song, and video, which are what they do best and like, but also put it into practice in real life. They has become a true messenger in this era.
