ABSTRACT

In this paper, we attempted to reproduce Jecheon’s unique locality through various texts arround Uirimji, such as “The Legend of Jangjamot”, “The Legend of Turtle Rock”, and “The Song of Eo, the Muscular Man, Killing the Snake”. Chungbuk Jecheon is a basin located between the Charyeong Mountains and the Sobaek Mountains, which branch off from the Taebaek Mountains. Due to these geographical conditions, there were frequent droughts and the land was barren, so there were few rich people and many poor people. Accordingly, it appears that the awareness of being wary of monopolization of wealth and sharing the acquired wealth was stronger than in other regions, and it is understandable in this context that each variation of the “Legend of Jangjamot” handed down in the Jecheon region is quite different from the general version. Meanwhile, Jecheon was so remote that it was completely untouched by the outside world, and because of this, it is presumed that its wariness toward outsiders was greater than in other regions. “The Song of Eo, the Muscular Man, Killing the Snake”, in which the five brothers restore the existing stable order by destroying a snake that invaded their land, and “The Legend of Turtle Rock”, which calls for active hospitality toward outsiders, are a series of outcomes that reflect this locality of theJecheon region.
