AB - This article aims to examine film prodution planning in the 1970s, focusing on Film, a magazine published by the Korean Film Corporation. The role of film planning or producers in the Korean film industry began to emerge in the mid-1960s, and the importance of film planning in relation to the declining number of audiences was recognized in the 1970s, a period of recession in Korean cinema. In addition, Film is an indicator that can be linked to the film policy of the Park Chung-hee regime to check the trends in film planning at the time. In the case of Film, the magazine of the Korean Film Corporation, the emphasis on the importance of film planning was at odds with the government’s policy of prior review, and it sought to explore the direction of planning by connecting contemporary audience trends with production trends.
Although the magazine’s search for a new direction in film planning could not overcome the recession in the Korean film industry, the emphasis on the role of the producer and the recognition of the professionalism of film planning continued after the 1980s, when the commerciality of films became more emphasized and a free production environment was secured. This awareness of the problem is the basis for the emergence of producers in the early 1990s and the production of planned films. In other words, when discussing Korean film history centered on film planning, it is necessary to examine the trends of production companies and audiences in the 1970s, and Film is worth discussing in a different aspect from previous magazine studies in that it provides a valid foundation for understanding them.
