ABSTRACT

This study examines how Kim Geum-suk’s graphic novel, Jiseul, expresses and records the historical memory of the Jeju 4·3 Incident. Since this work is based on the post-memory of a generation that did not directly experience the incident, it focuses on mourning for the victims rather than specifically recording the incident. First, it uses paratext to clarify the reality of the incident and solidify what we should remember and pay attention to. Next, it uses omission, symbolism, and the aesthetics of ink and wash to emotionally empathize with the tragic incident and the suffering of the victims. This is Kim Geum-suk’s way of expressing the (im) possible to reproduce and suffering, and at the same time, it is a practical act of remembering and sharing the incident and suffering. Kim Geum-suk’s Jiseul is a work that demonstrates the literary and artistic value of graphic novels, and it is also noteworthy in that it can open up a new way to remember and share historical events in modern society.
