AB - This study critically examines the cultural significance and utilization potential of South Korea’s railway heritage, with a particular focus on the Gangwon region, aiming to explore strategic linkages between cultural heritage utilization, regional tourism development, and economic revitalization. Railway assets embody the historical trajectories of modernization and industrialization while symbolizing local community identities. The systematic documentation and digital archiving of these assets not only serve as vital resources for academic research and education but also constitute a strategic framework for the sustainable preservation of cultural heritage. Consequently, proactive engagement in the utilization of railway heritage is imperative.
Focusing on representative case studies in Gangwon, such as the Hwacheon Train Pension, Donghae Sea Train, Taebaek Aurora Park, and Jeongseon Rail Bike, this research analyzes both the potential and constraints of railway assets as cultural tourism resources. The study underscores the necessity for practical interventions including the transformation of sites into immersive, stay-oriented tourist destinations, enhanced local community participation, and the development of digital content platforms. Moreover, it highlights the critical importance of establishing collaborative governance frameworks among governmental bodies, local authorities, and private stakeholders, alongside policy and institutional reforms to ensure the sustainable conservation and effective activation of railway heritage.
In conclusion, the cultural reconfiguration of railway assets functions as a strategic instrument to reinforce regional identity and stimulate tourism growth. Particularly through integrative approaches with the Gangwon region, such efforts can facilitate sustainable and meaningful regional development. Additionally, railway heritage holds intrinsic value as a public cultural asset that transmits historical experience and collective memory to future generations.
