ABSTRACT

This study analyzes 12,073 word units from the spontaneous speech of Russian-speaking educators in Korea to examine consonantal errors and fossilized patterns, and to identify characteristics of their Korean consonant production. The results show that the overall error rate was low and did not hinder communication, and although certain consonants exhibited recurring error tendencies, these did not form consistent fossilized patterns across all utterances. The errors were observed in the order of /ŋ/ > /p/ > /t͈/ > /n/. In the nasal category, the frequent substitution of syllable-final /ŋ/ with /n/ appears to stem from the absence of a velar nasal phoneme in Russian. In Korean, lenis and aspirated voiceless stops in word-initial position are distinguished by the degree of aspiration, whereas Russian does not employ aspiration as a phonemic cue. As a result, Russian speakers showed difficulty differentiating this contrast. Although this study is limited by its small number of highly proficient participants, it is meaningful in that it analyzes the spontaneous speech of Russian speaking bilingual educators working in Korea. Furthermore, the study holds methodological significance in that it examines pronunciation tendencies by comprehensively considering the consonantal and allophonic systems of both languages, as well as phoneme position and adjacent phonological environments.
